09. Mature themes

The mainstream animes are usually the cute ones, with lovable warriors and moral lessons on love, friendship, and responsibility. You can find this in Sailor Moon or Pokemon, for instance, but that is not all there is to anime.

Although those are the types of stories that usually make big hits and are talked about everywhere, you can still find mature themes in anime such as criminal organizations, substance abuse, sex, violence, and many others. 

A portrayal of this feature can be found in the anime ‘Banana Fish,’ a crime thriller that involves organized crime, government corruption, and a traumatic past in the main character’s life.
