In July, South Koreans travel to Boryeong, a city in the south of the country, to enthusiastically participate in a two-week-long festival featuring a variety of mud-related activities.

The festival originated as a promotional event for Boryeong’s mud cosmetics industry but evolved into a variety of fun activities related to mud, such as applying masks and participating in mud baths.

The mud from Boryeong is considered to have therapeutic and beautifying properties, so people play around with mudslides, mud wrestling, mud obstacle courses, and mud painting.
