05. Esther and Eva Hart Letter

Esther and Eva Hart’s letter – Titanic Belfast

Esther Hart and her seven-year-old daughter, Eva Hart, wrote together what is considered to be the last letter written on board of the Titanic. This letter was sold at auction for a world record of £119,000 and is now on display at Titanic Belfast.

The letter was addressed to Esther’s mother and Eva’s grandmother, who lived in Chadwell Heath. It was written just eight hours before the ship struck the iceberg. The letter survived the drowning because it was in the pocket of Esther’s husband’s coat, which he gave to her when she boarded the lifeboat. Unfortunately, he did not survive the sinking of the ship.
