09. Great Wall of China

The majestic Great Wall of China, a marvel that has withstood centuries, is now under siege. 

The relentless wave of people in this place, combined with the forces of nature acting on it for centuries, is gradually eroding its grandeur, and the Wall is being ruined by tourism.

Excessive foot traffic wears down the ancient stones, while illegal scavengers clandestinely dismantle parts of the wall to use in construction.

Also, thieves strip it of plaques and relics, later sold as mementos. Even stringent fines have failed to deter the ongoing degradation.

The Great Wall, once an indomitable symbol of human achievement, now bears witness to the harsh reality of places ruined by tourism.
