01. The show was originally called Insomnia Cafe

It may be difficult to picture ‘Friends’ having any other title. It sums up the TV show so perfectly and is such a comforting word. However, the reality is that it was not the original title planned for the show.

Before being officially named ‘Friends,’ in its early stages of development, the show was actually referred to as ‘Insomnia Cafe’, or simply ‘Insomnia.’

The show’s creators, David Crane and Marta Kauffman, settled on ‘Friends’ to better reflect the central theme of friendship that surrounds the show.
