Digging holes

Dogs may dig holes to create a cool spot in the ground where they can lie down. Also, some dogs dig to hide objects, such as toys or food. 

This behavior is often a leftover instinct from their ancestors who buried food to save it for later or to keep it away from competitors. 

If your dog digs holes but doesn’t seem to serve any of the purposes above, they may be trying to release energy or simply explore their surroundings.
