Loy Krathong is celebrated with various events, parades and traditional dances. This celebration usually takes place on the full moon night of the twelfth lunar month, which typically falls in November.

Its history is deeply involved with the local culture and religion and is a time of paying respect to the water spirits, especially the goddess of water, Mae Khongkha. People can pay homage to the spirits by floating decorated baskets on bodies of water.

That’s where the festival’s name comes from, as it can be translated into “Floating Crown.” The water takes the main role here and signifies a moment for purification from negativities and manifestation of good luck.
