The ship’s journey began on April 10, 1912, in Southampton, England, and was headed to New York City. The Titanic was one of the most luxurious and technologically advanced ships of its time. However, on the night of April 14, only four days later, the ship struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean and sank. With approximately 2,224 people on board, this maritime disaster resulted in the deaths of more than 1,500 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This disaster resulted in significant changes in maritime safety regulations, leading to the establishment of international rules requiring ships to carry enough lifeboats for all passengers and crew, better iceberg monitoring, and improved communication at sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All those who survived have talked about heroism, sacrifice, and tragedy when asked about the Titanic. The shipwreck itself was discovered in 1985 on the ocean floor, and numerous expeditions have been conducted to investigate the Titanic’s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The recovery of artifacts from the ship has brought in more evidence of what happened to the Titanic and provided new insights into this tragedy and the stories of those who were on board. Although the Titanic was only located at the bottom of the ocean 75 years after it sank, many personal and structural items were still salvaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, many items did not become publicized since some families and others considered it to be disrespectful and akin to grave-digging, as the Titanic can be seen as a grave for all its victims. After such a tragedy happens, it is natural to wonder what initiatives could have been taken and what tools could have been used to prevent it from happening. One of the things most people wonder about is whether the Titanic crew could have spotted the iceberg earlier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although it can’t be affirmed that this alone would have saved the ship, it turns out the Titanic crew did have binoculars on board. However, they were locked, and their key was not on the ship, as you will see in the next topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Titanic provided accommodations and entertainment to cater to its affluent passengers, who paid substantial sums to be aboard this ship. Classical musicians, luxurious cabins, and first-class lavish culinary meals were among the perks for the passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naturally, people dressed in their finest clothing and accessories to explore the ship. Many personal, lavish items were found, and they reveal a lot about their owners and the profiles of the passengers on board the Titanic. At the bottom of the ocean, alongside the remains of the Titanic, a golden purse and a hairpin were found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

If you have watched the 1997 movie adaptation of Titanic, you may remember the iconic and heartbreaking scene of the musicians playing while the ship is sinking, purely to try to lighten the situation and make people feel less desperate. That scene is actually based on real facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the sheet music pieces played by the musicians on the Titanic was also found and is considered one of the most precious artifacts to commemorate the memories of this tragedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although there is no way to know for sure what the last song played by these brave musicians was, among their repertoire, ‘Put Your Arms Around Me, Honey’ warmed up the cold nights onboard the Titanic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

It is not surprising that most of the passengers on board the Titanic were from the upper classes. The price of a first-class ticket could go up to \u00a3870 (about \u00a3100,000 today), depending on the type of suite chosen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, many lavish items were found among the artifacts of the Titanic, and one of them was a scented oils collection that belonged to the chemist Adolphe Saalfeld. Not only were the glass containers of these scented oils preserved, but their original perfumes are still intact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Out of a total of 3,000 lifejackets on board the Titanic, only 12 remain today in the world. It was retrieved by the Mackay-Bennett, the first of a total of four ships sent by the White Star Line to search for bodies after the sinking of the Titanic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Made from linen and cork, this artifact was recovered from the wreck site and represents one of the main items that helped search crews find bodies. Of the over 1,500 victims, only 333 people were found, as passengers and crew members who could not obtain a lifejacket drowned in the ocean. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This lifejacket is not only an essential emergency aid but also a significant item in the search for more survivors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

On May 31, 1911, the Titanic’s launch day occurred. It was a highly anticipated event where people would finally see the ‘unsinkable’ ship for the first time and take a look at its luxurious and advanced design. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This event reinforced how significant and exciting it was for the passengers when April 1912 finally arrived, and they boarded the most famous ship of the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
