Friends aired for 10 consecutive years and many fun moments were shared amongst the cast and crew backstage. We brought 15 curious facts about Friends to celebrate the show!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

01. The show was originally called Insomnia Cafe<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It may be difficult to picture ‘Friends’ having any other title. It sums up the TV show so perfectly and is such a comforting word. However, the reality is that it was not the original title planned for the show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before being officially named ‘Friends,’ in its early stages of development, the show was actually referred to as ‘Insomnia Cafe\u2019, or simply \u2018Insomnia.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The show’s creators, David Crane and Marta Kauffman, settled on ‘Friends’ to better reflect the central theme of friendship that surrounds the show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

02. The six main characters were all named after characters from the soap opera All My Children<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It’s actually true! The six main characters on ‘Friends’ were all named after characters from the soap opera ‘All My Children.’<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘All My Children’ was a very popular soap opera that portrayed the lives and relationships of its characters in Pine Valley in a dramatic storyline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among these characters was Ross Chandler (Robert Gentry), who inspired Ross’s name. Chandler’s name comes from the main family in ‘All My Children,’ the Chandlers, and Joey is named after Joe Martin (Ray McDonnell). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rachel Green’s name is a nod to the complex character Janet Green (Kate Collins), while Phoebe was named after Phoebe Wallingford (Ruth Warrick). Originally, Monica was named Monique, a name used in the soap opera as an alias for Monique Jonvil, who was, in reality, the character Daisy Murdoch (Gillian Spencer).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

03. David Schwimmer was the only cast member who didn’t have to audition for his role<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not only did David Schwimmer not have to audition for his role as Ross Geller, but Ross Geller was a character created with him in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kevin Bright of Bright\/Kauffman\/Crane Productions is one of the producers of the show and had previously worked with David Schwimmer before working on ‘Friends.’<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an interview with USA Today, Kevin Bright talked about the process of casting the ‘Friends’ actors. \u201cDavid Schwimmer we worked with before, and the writers had him in mind for the part of Ross. Lisa and Jennifer and Matthew and Matt were cast from auditions. Courteney we originally wanted to play Rachel, and she insisted she wasn’t Rachel but Monica. And she was right.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

04. The opening credits sequence was not filmed in New York City<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The classic and iconic opening for the TV show was not actually filmed in New York, much like most of the show itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was all actually filmed on the Warner Bros. Studio lot in Burbank, California, for logistical and budgetary reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, to capture the essence of New York City, the show’s creators and production team made efforts to create a realistic portrayal of the city, including using exterior shots of New York City landmarks and establishing shots to set the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

05. The cast members all took a trip to Las Vegas together before the pilot episode aired<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the recent ‘Friends’ Reunion, James Burrows, the TV director who directed Friends and helped cast the actors for the show, talked about how he took the whole crew to Vegas before the pilot episode aired for a special bonding session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There, he made sure they knew it was their last trip as anonymous people – and he was right about that. They had dinner, he gave them $200 each to gamble, and then they went back to working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It sure brings back some fun memories of the Friends episode where they all go to Sin City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

06. The show was filmed in front of a live audience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It was very common for sitcoms in the 1990s and early 2000s to have live audiences or to add audio effects of live audiences laughing to their episodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regarding Friends, some people suggest that the laughs were added after recording the episodes. However, the show was actually recorded in front of a live audience that consisted of up to 300 people who were fans of the show and could watch it being recorded before everyone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sounds really cool, doesn’t it? However, the final episodes of each season didn’t include the live audience as a safety measure to prevent major plot details from being leaked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

07. Lisa Kudrow was pregnant in real life while filming the fourth season of the show<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The actress was expecting her first and only son, Julian Murray Stern, in 1998. As filming progressed, her belly began to grow, and the storyline of Phoebe getting pregnant with triplets was incorporated into the season’s plot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

08. Matthew Perry had drugs addiction problems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In recent years, Matthew Perry, our Chandler Bing, has openly addressed his drug addiction issues and his daily struggle for recovery and sobriety. For almost as long as his Hollywood career, Matthew has battled alcohol and drug addiction, which began when he was prescribed opioid painkillers after an accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has recently discussed his struggles in a People interview and in his memoir, ‘Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,’ published in 2022. In his book, he reveals that he has been to rehab 15 times and has undergone 14 surgeries. At one point, he was filming ‘Friends’ while on drugs. He said, ‘Season 9 was the year that I was sober the whole way through. And guess which season I got nominated for best actor? I was like, “That should tell me something.”‘<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. James Michael Tyler, the Gunther, was actually working as a barista at one coffee shop before he was cast on the show<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In an interview with Digital Spy, James Michael Tyler talked about how he had a Master’s in fine arts, but knowing how to work a coffee machine got him into the acting world, which he described as a ‘happy accident.’ <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sadly, James Michael Tyler passed away in 2021 after battling prostate cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

11. All six actors made $1 million per episode for the final two seasons<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The ‘Friends’ stars started by earning $25,000 per episode in the first season, which increased to $40,000 per episode in the second season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As reported by Business Insider, during the first two seasons, David Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston were earning more money than the rest of the cast due to the main focus on Rachel and Ross’s relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

15. The show’s creators, Marta Kauffman and David Crane, wrote the theme song<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The iconic theme song “I’ll Be There for You” was actually written by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, the creators of the TV show ‘Friends,’ along with Michael Skloff and Allee Willis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initially, the American rock band R.E.M. was approached to grant permission for their song “Shiny Happy People” to be used as the theme for “Friends.” However, they declined the opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
