When we look back at how life used to be, many items have become obsolete and now find their place in museums or as decorations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We’ve selected a few baby boomer skills that are no longer required. Join us on this nostalgic journey through items and habits that were once a part of our daily lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

How many phone numbers do you know by memory today? Only yours? Maybe a few family or close friends’ numbers? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Memorizing phone numbers used to be fundamental for daily communication since phones didn’t allow saving numbers, or their internal space couldn’t register many archives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although this habit may have gone underutilized since today’s smartphones can store so many things, including hundreds of contacts, it can still be very useful to memorize a few phone numbers in case of an emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Using phonebooks<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Another reason why we had to memorize phone numbers was because of phonebooks, also known as phone directories. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These bulky and heavy books contained the contact information of households and businesses that were customers of phone companies. Every year, each phone company would release a phonebook with all the contacts, which were delivered to their clients annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You could easily look up any contact and find people you knew in these books. However, due to their substantial size, it was very inconvenient to carry them around. So, memorizing a few important contacts was very useful. It was also common to carry your own small phonebook with a few important contacts written by hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

People were adventurous to their core when digital technology wasn’t around. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When traveling, the first thing people would do was get a map of the new city they were in or going to so they could navigate it easily. Exploring new places, or even your own hometown, with a map in your hands was common. It was a literal life-saving item, but now, maps are more of a decoration or collector’s item.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nowadays, we can rely on GPS and easily add the address we want to reach, making travel more convenient. What’s more, we have our destinations narrated for us by the GPS system, so we don’t even have to look at it and can simply drive or walk as we receive instructions to our destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Using library card catalogs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Library card catalogs served as organizational systems to help locate primarily books, but also other documents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In libraries, each book had its corresponding card where all its information was cataloged and could be stored alongside other cards. Usually organized in alphabetical order, the cards were more easily accessed than the books themselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This system made it easier to understand the entire collection without having to go to each shelf and check each book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nowadays, libraries easily store all book information in computers and only need to type the name of the book or author to access all the information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Recent generations may have no clue what a rotary dial phone is. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rotary phones were very popular in the mid-20th century, before push-buttons were invented, let alone touch screens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This vintage piece has its appeal, although it was definitely not practical. To make calls on these phones, you would insert your finger into the hole corresponding to the number you wanted to dial and rotate it clockwise until it stopped. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, you would wait for the rotary to return to its initial position and repeat the process to dial all the numbers you wanted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Using a typewriter<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Some people still have typewriters these days, whether as a decorative item or for sentimental value. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is actually very fun to see a typewriter in function because it has individual keys for each letter, number, and symbol – just like our regular keyboards. But when a key is pressed, a metal arm with a typebar at the end swings up and strikes an inked ribbon to transfer the character onto paper. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you typed something wrong, you couldn’t just tap backspace and start over; you had to apply erasing fluid over the mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Let’s start with the basics. A VHS tape is an analog video cassette tape used for recording and watching video and audio during the final decades of the 20th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, rewinding VHS tapes refers to the process of winding the tape back to the beginning or a specific point on the tape after it has been played or recorded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It wasn’t possible to simply press ‘back’ on the remote and quickly return to the part you wanted to watch. Instead, you would need to eject the tape and rewind it manually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The dial-up modem was what connected computers to the internet by transmitting data through analog telephone lines. Modems established connections by dialing a telephone number provided by an internet service provider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the connection was established, the modem made a very characteristic sound, like static noises and beeps. Many people still remember this distinctive sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Yes, changing the channel and adjusting the volume was also a manual process, requiring you to walk all the way to your device to make these adjustments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
