Nature can be pretty surprising – and scary – sometimes!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When we think of nature, we usually perceive it as a calming presence that we turn to when we want to wind down, relax, and disconnect from the busy world. However, its vast biodiversity can be rather intimidating at times. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps this is because we have become accustomed to living in cities, where wild animals are too afraid to inhabit. It seems impossible to imagine that, at one point, we, as human beings, coexisted with various animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have curated a few pictures that capture how surprising nature can be and, at times, a bit unhinged as well. There are just so many scary and weird-looking animals and plants existing out there, and we have no idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this post, we will showcase situations in which nature resembles more of a fantasy\u2014or even a horror\u2014movie than the peaceful place with butterflies, grass, and flowers that we often envision. Trigger warning: you may become more conscious of frightening animals after reading this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

10. Do you see?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It is widely known that many animals have developed the most diverse survival skills, and one of them is camouflage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some animals can blend into their background to go undetected by potential predators and and these camouflage strategies are often a result of evolutionary processes, where animals that are better camouflaged have a higher chance of survival and passing on their genes to the next generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although spiders can be scary and poisonous, we have to admit that this is actually a pretty cool skill. Look at her! She is really good at her job I almost didn\u2019t see her!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

09. Check behind the door<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s not freak out unnecessarily just yet! This is probably in some countryside very far from more populated cities, and we are likely safe from ever witnessing such a scene in our lifetime. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, even though lizards are harmless and can even be kept as pets, it must be shocking to look behind a door, expecting to find a single spider at most, and instead discover a whole civilization of lizards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are at least three family generations behind a single door. Shocking, to say the least!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

08. The frogs were hoping for a ride<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In nature, there is a phenomenon called mutualism, which is an ecological relationship between individuals of different species, wherein both benefit from the interaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This dynamic is quite fascinating and can be observed especially between tarantulas and certain species of frogs. They essentially keep each other as pets to protect themselves from other predators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While I don\u2019t believe mutualism precisely describes what is happening in the picture above, these frogs have hopped onto a snake for a free ride, as if it were public transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This phenomenon is not well-documented to have a specific explanation by specialists. Nevertheless, animals hitching rides on other animals occur for various reasons, and frogs riding on snakes might be more of an incidental occurrence, possibly motivated by camouflage and body temperature regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Either way, the snake appears unbothered, as if it is its duty to transport these frogs to their destinations, wherever that may be. It seems kind of sweet, doesn’t it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

07. Seriously, always check the inside of your shoe<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Now, I don\u2019t know where the owner of this shoe is from, but this image will haunt me forever! Maybe this is why they say ignorance is a blessing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is amazing how our brains work: we live undisturbedly our whole lives not knowing all the dangers that exist in the world, and once we become aware of them, we get a bit paranoid, thinking that now that we know of these situations, they will definitely happen to us!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While growing up, you’ve probably heard from your grandparents or even your parents telling you to always check inside your shoes, as there may be animals inside them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have always expected to find small spiders, in the most extreme cases, but a whole actual snake inside a shoe? Doesn\u2019t it have any other place to hide? I would immediately throw my shoe away, call the firefighters, move to another country, and change my identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

06. The car is yours, spider<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A chill just went up my spine! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, besides checking inside the shoe, do I have to inspect the car handle as well? I wish nature’s beings would just respect each other’s personal space (this goes for humans as well). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But putting myself in this person’s shoes: I wouldn’t take my eyes off this spider. The only thing worse than a big spider on my car handle is the big spider disappearing from my car handle, and me having no idea where it has gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, like the owner of this picture, I would instantly snap a photo if I saw this because if I told someone, nobody would believe me. Also, I am glad this person noticed the spider before putting their hand on the handle!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

05. Wow!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This picture isn\u2019t so scary, is it? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I mean, if you look at it as a wise tree from an old children\u2019s movie, where the characters go to get advice and end up befriending the tree, it can be a more amicable picture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another way to not be so scared by objects that resemble human emotions and other expressions is to face these situations for what they are: pareidolia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a psychological phenomenon in which the human mind perceives familiar patterns or shapes, such as faces or recognizable objects, in unrelated or random stimuli. It’s a form of pattern recognition that occurs in the brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Either way, as it is a real picture of a real tree out there, I still wouldn\u2019t like to see it in person, even though I try to use my imagination to dissuade this image from having a scary meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

04. Pretty and eerie<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The fact that there are animals with red eyes walking – or flying – around has intimidated me a little bit, but in a very cool way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The owl above is scientifically named \u2018Asio Stygius,\u2019 and the word \u2018Stygian\u2019 is often associated with the River Styx in Greek mythology, which is a river in the underworld. The word ‘Stygian’ is used to describe something related to the Styx or something dark and gloomy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A pretty accurate name for this animal! Yes, this is a scary-looking owl, but it is also very elegant, and its dark features bring a unique appearance to it. Definitely worth being a character in a dark children’s cartoon, like Coraline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This owl is native to parts of Central and South America, and its dark coloration helps it blend into its forested habitats, similar to the camouflage skill of the spiders we saw earlier!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

03. If you can fly, why do you want a bike?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Now, bees and wasps always seem to choose the most inconvenient places to build their hives. It\u2019s like that\u2019s part of their natural instincts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a case like this, you can contact specialized professionals to safely remove the insects from the bike, of course. But, come on buddies, we are trying to save the bees from extinction, yet we forgot to tell them they are an endangered species. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How about teaching them some self-preservation? Some survival skills and strategic home-building? Despite the threats that some bee species face, including habitat loss, pesticide exposure, climate change, and diseases, they still fly around clueless, apparently enjoying themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

02. Snapdragon seed pods can be creepy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Nature definitely works in mysterious ways. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The unnerving plant above is a Snapdragon seed pod, a structure that contains the seeds of the Snapdragon plant. The plant’s flowers resemble a mix of dragons and skulls, and its ‘jaw’ opens and closes with the wind breeze. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we get creative, this would make the perfect natural Halloween decoration, and it even brings its own special effects and in case you are interested, these plants are considerably easy to care for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the flowers have bloomed and the petals have fallen off, seed pods will begin to form at the base of the flower spike, giving you an organic, eco-friendly creepy decoration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Finally, something nature has made that isn\u2019t scary! I was beginning to lose hope. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This sad-looking flower is a ‘Dracula Saulii,’ a species of orchid originating in Peru, where it inhabits humid and cloudy mountain forests. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I can totally picture this flower in a gray, rainy place, where it drowns itself in its melancholy and dreads life and existence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, this flower kinda looks like a sad monkey? The more you Google pictures of a Dracula Saulii, the more it resembles faces; you should try it!<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
