Using a dial-up modem
Using a computer in the old days could be a test of patience.
The dial-up modem was what connected computers to the internet by transmitting data through analog telephone lines. Modems established connections by dialing a telephone number provided by an internet service provider.
When the connection was established, the modem made a very characteristic sound, like static noises and beeps. Many people still remember this distinctive sound.
