Sinterklaas – Netherlands
Rooted in Dutch and Belgian folklore, Sinterklaas is a holiday with religious origins.
Sinterklaas is a winter figure based on Saint Nicholas, who arrives in the Netherlands by steamboat from Spain in mid-November. His arrival is often accompanied by festive parades in towns and cities, where people come together to welcome him.
Sinterklaas is associated with the act of gift-giving. On the evening of December 5th, families and friends gather to exchange gifts.
