Inti Raymi – Peru
This traditional Incan festival celebrates the winter solstice and honors the sun god Inti.
Inti Raymi is a religious ritual that is held around the 21st of July. Back in pre-colonial Peru, priests and Incan nobility performed elaborate rituals and ceremonies to honor Inti and seek his blessings for a bountiful harvest in the coming year.
Even though the festival was suppressed by Spanish colonization, modern Peruvians try to keep this tradition alive and reconstruct the Inti Raymi festival. The vibrant festivities include music, feasting, and dance and attract many tourists every year.
