Generally, the Amish are not allowed to use electricity in their homes. One of the reasons for this is because the Amish do not view progress as necessarily something better.

However, some Amish communities allow the use of limited forms of electricity, such as battery power for lights and machinery. On the other hand, electricity generated by public power lines, TVs, computers, and modern tractors is not allowed.

The reason for this is that all of these items can be seen as ‘tempting’ to the broader society and could divert the Amish from their beliefs and culture within the community.

Lately, however, some groups have allowed the presence of one telephone per community. Telephone ownership is generally banned as it contributes to pride and individualism, but the community phone has been allowed since the 1950s for emergency purposes.
